When I first saw the shop of
Hillary Bird, I instantly fell in love. Her enchanting illustrations left me wondering, what inspires this artist? So I asked!
Beautifully said, in her own words:
Having a background in textiles, I am naturally inspired by pattern in any shape or form - whether that be in a beautiful vintage fabric, the distressing on a side of a building, or the intricate structure of a bird's feather. I love the sense of harmony you can achieve by introducing this sort of repetition to a design. The beauty of animals and nature continually inspires me. Finally, I like to approach my work with a sense of whimsy and playful absurdity, so if nothing else I'm happy if I've made you smile!
Her textile background is apparent in her designs, especially in the work "wolf king" which plays with patterns on the ears and chest. I could easily see this pattern translated into a fabric print. Also, I really like the theme of her work, which focuses on the idyllic relationship between humans and animals. The prints "teatime" and "the rescue" portray a perfect friendship between this girl and her best bear companion.
